Sneaky Greens Chocolate Recovery Shake

A chocolate shake with a handful of spinach you will never taste.

This is my morning shake, and the trick is in the name. It tastes like a chocolate milkshake, but there is a handful of spinach blended in that you will never taste, plus chia for fiber and a banana for natural sweetness and quick energy. MaxWell Nourish brings the chocolate and the protein, and a scoop of creatine rounds it out for recovery. Greens before you have even thought about lunch.

Method

  1. Add the chocolate milk to the blender first, then the banana, spinach, chia seeds, MaxWell Nourish, and creatine.
  2. Blend on high until completely smooth, 30 to 60 seconds. For a thicker, colder shake, use a frozen banana or add a few ice cubes and blend again.
  3. Pour into a tall glass and drink right away, while the chia is still suspended and the shake is cold.
Why the Sneaky Greens Work

The whole idea here is to win breakfast before the day starts. You get 37 grams of protein from the chocolate milk and MaxWell Nourish, which makes this a real meal and not just a treat, plus a big 9 grams of fiber and almost 2.7 grams of omega-3 from the chia seeds. That is a serious nutrition floor for a five-minute blend.

Then there is the spinach you cannot taste. One cup blended into chocolate disappears completely, but it still brings 146 micrograms of vitamin K, a big dose of lutein and zeaxanthin for the eyes, plus folate and potassium. Most people fight to get greens in at dinner. This gets them in before you have left the kitchen.

A note on sugar: most of the 36 grams is natural, from the banana and the chocolate milk. For less sugar, use unsweetened or low-sugar chocolate milk, or swap to half a banana. Contains milk.

Built on

MaxWell Nourish + Creatine

This shake is built on two MaxWell products. Nourish is the chocolate and the protein base, a meal-replacement blend with 24 grams of protein from seven protein sources, 5 grams of fiber, and digestive enzymes. It is what makes this a real breakfast and not just a treat, and it doubles as a kitchen ingredient anytime you need protein in a hurry.

Creatine is the recovery piece: 5 grams of creatine monohydrate, the most-studied performance supplement there is, taken daily for strength, power, and recovery between training days. It has no taste, so it disappears straight into the chocolate. Food first, supplements to fill the gaps.
